Halloween History
The Halloween celebration comes from an ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts occupied Ireland,United Kingdom and the northern France.
Celts celebrate Samhain on the night of 31st of October because they celebrated their new year on 1st November This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death.
Also The ghosts of the dead cause damage and trouble to their crops
The Druids built huge sacred bonfires, to commemorate the event They worn animal heads and typical skins for costumes too.
They re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.
The Roman Empire conquered the Celts in 43 Ad.
The Roman festivals were Feralia and a day to honor Pomona.
All souls’ Day was the new celebration and it was created in 1000 AD.They had a lot of similarities with Samhain: They honor the dead for example
The two festivals make bonfires,parades and dressing up in costumes like angels,devils and saints too.
Another name for this celebration is All saints’ Day The night before called All-Hallows Eve and finally becomes Halloween.
